Photo shoots for portraits and headshots should be relaxed and fun. I don't believe in limiting the number of shots, the number of backgrounds, or the number of outfits included. Getting a good result is the goal. Most sessions last an hour or two. We can try multiple backgrounds, multiple changes of clothes, whatever it takes to get the right looks.
After the shoot, all images are viewed and favorites are identified and retouched if necessary. Each session includes a CD of all images and a print of your favorite - with or without your name. Additional prints, or 4x6 proofs are also available for a tiny bit extra.
As with any photographer, I retain ownership of the image, but unlike some other photographers, you are free to use it as you wish. The only limitation is that you can't sell the image. If published anywhere other than a theater program, I appreciate a photo credit.
Shoot locations
I am very flexible and want to make sure you get the type of shots you want. I'm happy to shoot indoors, outdoors, or at a specific location. I have several locations in and around my home in North Seatac that provide suitable backdrops, but my studio setup can also travel to your home, or wherever you like.
If you prefer natural light shots, early mornings or late afternoons provide the best lighting, but this also depends on the location and the day.
Wardrobe, hair and makeup
For actor's headshots, it's best to look as you would look going into an audition. A business look and a casual look is always good if you do commercial shots. I'm also happy to do custom character shots - whatever you need. Bring several tops, and if you want 3/4 shots, a couple of pant or skirt option. Solid colors for clothing are best, so that the focus is on your face, not what you are wearing. Light makeup is usually best, and you will want to schedule for a time when you can be relaxed and well rested. I don't provide a makeup artist, but feel free to bring someone to help out with hair and makeup.
Black and white or color?
My opinion is that color is always better. Black and white headshots were the norm for many years, mostly because of reproduction costs. These days, almost everyone can afford a decent photo printer, so color is also an easy, inexpensive option. In the end, it's your choice. I shoot digitally, and all originals in in color. If you prefer black and white versions I can easily create them for you.
When audtioning, your headshot is how directors and casting agents will remember you. They saw your audition in full color, give them a full color photo to remember you by. Hair and eye color is also far easier to explain with a photo than with words on your resume.
Rates
I am currently offering headshot sessions for $150. This includes all images on CD, retouching of a handfull of favorites, and an 8.5" x 11" glossy print of your choice. Additional prints, or 4x6 proofs are extra.
Reproductions
There are many businesses around the country that offer reproduction services. As an actor, I personally prefer printing my own for each audition. It really depends on your needs. If you are planning a mass mailing to hundreds of theaters and casting directors, reproduction services might be the best choice. If you are only looking for something for local auditions, printing your own might be better.
After a photo shoot, you will have images with several different looks - comic, serious, smiling, etc. You may want to choose which headshot you use based on what you are auditioning for.
